ESPERANZA SPIERLING

September 9 - October 21, 2006

raumPhotographs by Esperanza Spierling could absolutely be described as abstract. This statement is valid in double respect. On the one hand, her mundane formality results from the distance to the picture object and works like an abstract composition of faces. On the other hand, the main consideration is devoted the question if emptiness or apparently not present content can become eidetic. Is it possible that a photograph works as minimalist picture and at the same time takes effect as space for imagination?
As if it was stringent consequence, she developed her works from order analyses in mostly public interiors to more and more reduced picture-architectual ensembles. It’s not the things, it is the idea of their existence for which Spierling tries to earn room. [...]
Similarly skillfully -  like the museum rooms that suddenly become pictures themselves - the photographer discloses new land with the current photographs of planetarias. However architecture does not appear as formal stipulation anymore, except for the construction structures of the projection domes shimmering through here and there. Still limited to a bare minimum, irregularity becomes part of the forms. Room convergents have disappeared. Geometry is only more that one of the constellations. Thus  ‚room‘ picked out as a central theme here becomes a doubtful dimension.
