Monika Grabuschnigg

Monika Grabuschnigg (b. 1987, Austria) completed her M.A. in Fine Arts at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and studied as an exchange student at the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem and in Santiago at the Universidad Católica de Chile.

Grabuschnigg’s recent work – predominantly large-scale clay sculptures produced in thematically and aesthetically distinct series – engages with the implications of contemporary love, desire and longing. In a society in which capitalism has created emotional precarity, where narcissism and self-marketing, non-commitment and Xanax are the toolbox for intimate encounters with others, Grabuschnigg’s intensely physical works treat love as a philosophically and culturally vital topic. Wrestling with its always multiple, layered narratives, her sculptures seek to incarnate love, to reveal how it informs and is informed by everything from political systems to social relations.

She is one of the winners of the Berlin Art Prize 2018 and in 2016 she received the most promising young artist award from the Federal State Government of Vorarlberg, Austria. Her works have been collected in the State Museum Vorarlberg, the Federal Artothek in Vienna, and the Graphic Collection
of the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna.

Monika Grabuschnigg lives and works in Berlin.
